iPad, almost there

Monday, March 15th, 2010

I’m excited to see the Apple iPad because it paves the way for the more advances in slate-format tablet computers.  They’ve been around for years, but never popular.  For probably 10 years I’ve had discussions with friends about the tech I want, and the iPad is close, but not quite there yet.

Here’s what I want:

  • A device that is the form factor of a plastic clipboard:  thin, light, and durable
  • Color touch display
  • Wireless broadband sufficient for video
  • Cost under $300

At that price point the device could be used as a news reader at the breakfast table, or as a video screen hanging on the wall by the bathroom sink to get the daily headlines and weather.  More expensive, and people won’t buy extra ones to scatter around for convenience.

The iPad is a little too thick, too expensive, and needs to be handled too gingerly.  A device that you could treat like a magazine would be liberating.  Maybe once flexible displays are perfected, you’ll even be able to roll it up to swat flies.

Oh, yeah.  It also needs Flash, multitasking, and long battery life.
