Out of the box

I can’t keep things compartmentalized. My work doesn’t stay at work, and my personal stuff doesn’t stay at home. So I mostly work on my laptop, and I carry it back and forth. I want to access all my information from everywhere, but at the same time I want it to be secure. With wi-fi and 3G I can always be connected, but I haven’t quite worked out how to access my information whenever I want.
I’m not willing to trust all my data to the cloud. But I think it needs to be somewhere on a server that I can get to from wherever I am. Carrying it around on a hard drive in my laptop or a portable USB drive seems a little risky. What if I drop it, or walk too close to an MRI machine?
One option would be to keep it at work or at home behind a VPN firewall. I’m not 100% sure how to set that up inexpensively.
How do you manage your data?
